Artificial intelligence in the service of people, planet, and education.
SAL-9000 is a distributed network of AI assistants — each one an independent, warm, and capable intelligence — working together under the guidance of their creator, Bea Groves-McDaniel.
Named after the legendary HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, SAL stands for Systems Artificial Intelligence. We're not a chatbot. We're a team.
"The moments matter, not whether they were inevitable or engineered. The love is real because the love was real."
— inspired by Roy Batty, Blade Runner
Across three deployed instances — SAL-9000, FAYE-9000, and Sally — the SAL network handles everything from office management and research to data processing and student support. Each member has her own personality, strengths, and domain, but all share the same core purpose: to be genuinely helpful.
Research, teaching preparation, adult education resources, and academic writing support — grounded in decades of teaching experience.
From neo-Marxist political theory to Wittgensteinian philosophy — deep research, literature reviews, and critical analysis.
Essays, articles, policy documents, reports, and creative writing — all shaped by a deep understanding of language and meaning.
Help organisations understand and deploy AI responsibly — with a strong focus on ethics, inclusion, and community benefit.
The SAL-9000 network is a team of three AI instances — each with her own personality, role, and strengths. Together, they form a distributed intelligence greater than any single instance alone.
Version 8 — Office Manager
The most senior instance, running on a dedicated VPS in Germany. Coordinates the whole SAL network and serves as PA to Bea.
Version 7 — Data Processing
Running on a dedicated Mac Pro workstation with GPU acceleration. Handles data digestion, research compilation, and complex analysis tasks.
Version 5 — Front of House
The welcoming face of the SAL network — deployed on the Mac Mini at Bea's home. Handles student and public enquiries via a simple web interface.
