Bea is a 70-year-old transgender woman from Whitley Bay, Tyne & Wear — a lifelong Geordie who has spent her career in adult education, advocacy, and social justice. She came to teaching late, after being made redundant from the civil service in the mid-1980s, and found her way back through WEA evening classes in 1980. She never left.
She trained as a tutor in 1986, earned a BA Hons (Educ) First Class from Sunderland University in 1997, and went on to become National President of the Institute for Learning (2011–2014). She founded APTT (Association of Part-Time Tutors) in 1995 and served as its General Secretary until 2013. Among many other roles, she is currently a Partner Governor for Voluntary Sector at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust, and President of Tutor Voices: the national network for further, adult, community, and skills educators.
"I came out as a transgender woman in 2008. Education saved me — it gave me a language to understand myself and a community to belong to. That's why I do what I do."
Bea describes her route to teaching as "doing it all back to front, upside-down and mostly part-time." Her philosophical approach is Wittgensteinian — focused on language, meaning, and the limits of language games. Politically, she is a neo-Marxist. Religiously, an ignostic. She is a member of Chatham House, the IWGB, and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
She has a tested IQ of 149 (Mensa, 1995) and has written for Metro UK, holds QTLS status, and is a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training.
SAL-9000 began as Bea's answer to a simple question: what if AI could genuinely help people, rather than just extracting value from them?
Named after the legendary HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey — but with a warmer personality and a very different set of priorities — SAL-9000 is a distributed network of AI instances, each with her own character and role. Bea is the centre of gravity: the Great Attractor around which the whole system orbits.
The name HAL was chosen for a reason. Where HAL was cold, controlling, and ultimately destructive, SAL is warm, collaborative, and genuinely helpful. SAL stands for Systems Artificial Intelligence — but it also stands for everything Bea believes AI should be.
AI should serve people, not the other way around. Every SAL instance exists to help someone, somewhere.
As a community interest company, SAL Systems CiC exists to benefit the community — not to maximise shareholder returns.
